Early Childhood Program: Nursery, Pre-K, Kindergarten

PRACTICAL LIFE - Activities develop skills necessary for children to succeed in their surroundings; these include care of self, care of the environment, and social graces to interact with the world around them. This work develops coordination and the abilities to focus and persevere in completing tasks.

SENSORIAL TASKS - By utilizing their senses to explore their surroundings, children begin to understand basic concepts such as shape, size, color, and texture. These fundamental concepts lead to a better understanding of logic and increased concentration.

LANGUAGE - Children are totally immersed in language, and they progress from spoken to written words with care and deliberation. With Sandpaper Letters, children learn to recognize the shape and phonetic sounds of the alphabet, and, with the Moveable Alphabet, they isolate sounds in phonetic words. Children naturally progress to sounding out three and four letter phonetic words, and they build word recognition by mastering consonant blends, phonograms, and sight words.

MATH - Montessori materials introduce children to the world of numbers and help them to transition from the concrete to the abstract. Through Number Rods, Sandpaper Numbers, and Number Cards, children move from understanding quantity and symbol to associating both. Use of the Golden Bead materials continues their exploration of whole numbers into the thousands while learning the decimal system.

ART -The art program encourages creativity and imagination. Children enjoy working with tempera paint, watercolors, chalk, colored markers, pencils, crayons, and clay. Whether finger painting, working at the easel, or making crafts, children have fun expressing themselves as they practice their fine motor skills and reinforce basic concepts such as color, shape, and size.

MUSIC - Children enjoy discovering their singing voices as they learn different melodies. Opportunities abound to hone listening skills and to develop motor control as they play rhythmic instruments. Gradually, through the Kodály method, children learn the concept of rhythmic syllables and movements by marching, walking, running, and clapping.

RELIGION - Students experience God’s love through the words and actions of others. They learn simple prayers, and they participate in service activities with their buddy classes.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION - Children have formal classes in the gymnasium where they develop spatial and body awareness through a variety of activities. These classes foster teamwork, problem solving, and social, psychomotor, and locomotor skills.
